Senga captures eventful Diane

The Pascal Bary-trained Senga proved herself a force to be reckoned with by landing the Group 1 Prix de Diane

Twelve years on from his first success as a trainer in the Prix de Diane, Pascal Bary was tasting the prize all over again as Senga proved just too good in what turned out to be an eventful renewal.

Senga is by Breeders’ Cup Classic hero Blame

John Gosden-trained Shutter Speed looked to be travelling well under Frankie Dettori.

All the while, Senga made significant headway for jockey Stephane Pasquier to her outside and got to the lead just over a furlong out.

Just before then, there was trouble on the inside as Onthemoonagain looked to have stumbled and unshipped Christophe Soumillon.

The Flaxman Stables-owned filly kept on well into the final furlong and was a length clear at the winning post, with fast-finishers Sistercharlie and Terrakova coming too late.

A daughter of 2010 Breeders’ Cup Classic-winner Blame, Senga had her last run only a fortnight ago when trailing in third to La Sardane in the Prix de Sandringham.

Prior to that, she was sent off market leader for the Poule d’Essai des Pouliches but finished down the field.

Divine Proportion gave the same connections success in Chantilly’s one mile two and a half furlong feature back in 2005.

Prix Hocquart Longines
Earlier in the afternoon, another Bary-trained runner, Ice Breeze, prevailed in a blanket finish to the Group 2 Prix Hocquart Longines over a mile and a half.

In what could only be described as a falsely-run affair, outsider Falcon Wings led her four rivals along in the early stages.

As the field closed in on the turn for home, Ice Breeze found herself shuffled back to last in the hands of Vincent Cheminaud.

With the sprint beginning in earnest into the final two furlongs, Shakeel looked to kick on after being placed handily by Christophe Soumillon.

Ice Breeze challenged to the wide outside and gradually got on terms, putting her head in front within the last 100 yards to score a first victory at Group level.
